3 Concepts to Understand the Contextual Search


1 Execute searches relative to a specific asset, case, or participant


When viewing an entry in the IP graph, the details panels may contain a contextual search option. When selected, it displays a search box that has special options for the type of entity being viewed.


For example, the contextual search option for an Application has options to search the available file wrapper.

2 Each record has a task specific set of contextual search options


At the time of writing, the contextual search options by record type are listed below. More options are added from time to time.


Record Types Contextual Search Options
Applications File Wrappers searches the application's file wrapper by document title and contents.
Patents Backward Patent References searches all patents that in the backward citation tree of the selected patent.
Companies Patents searches patents granted to the company.

Applications searches published applications where this company is the applicant.
Examiner Applications searches published applications associated with the examiner.

File Wrappers searches file wrapper documents associated with the examiner.
PTAB Dockets Case Filings searches all documents filed in the case by title and contents.

Patent at Issue Record searches the patent, associated application, the asset family members and their respective file wrappers.
PTAB Judges PTAB Trial Decisions searches the contents of trial decisions where the judge was empaneled.

PTAB Appeals searches the contents of appeals associated with the judge.
Inventors Patents searches the title, claims, and specification of patents invented by the selected inventor.

Applications searches the title, claims, and specification of published applications invented by the selected inventor.
Attorneys Patents searches the title, claims, and specification of patents prosecuted by the selected attorney.

Applications searches the title, claims, and specification of published applications prosecuted by the selected attorney.
Firms Patents searches the title of patents prosecuted by the firm.

Applications searches the title of published applications associated to the firm.

3 Add search results to the active graph or view result reports


Depending on the type of search result it may have a button to "Add to IP Graph" which will add a record to the active graph.
